NEXUS feat. MGT - The Words That Got Away

FOR FANS OF: Peter Murphy, Gary Numan, The Mission, New Zero God, The Flowers of Romance, The Cure and Siouxsie & the Banshees.

First single from new NEXUS album "Ninouki" out early 2022. “The Words That Got Away” is a song about not giving up when things get tough, because somebody loves you but can’t find the words to tell you so.

Our very own Mike Pougounas, presenter of The Blackout Radio Show, and Mark Gemini Thwaite (MGT) first met in 2000 when NEXUS supported The Mission UK.

Thanks to Andi Sex Gang, Pougounas and MGT met again in 2017, backstage at a Peter Murphy show.

MGT played the guitars and produced the track, while Pougounas asked his old friend and member of the legendary Greek punk rock band, Stress, Louis Kontoulis, to play the trumpet.

As of December 20th 2021 “The Words That Got Away” is available digitally through Bandcamp - NEXUS discography on Bandcamp right here

Orkestra Obsolete play Blue Monday using 1930s instruments

Here is something we thought you might like!

New Order's Blue Monday was released on 7 March 1983, and its cutting-edge electronic groove changed pop music forever. But what would it have sounded like if it had been made 50 years earlier? In a special film made by BBC Arts, using only instruments available in the 1930s - from the theremin and musical saw to the harmonium and prepared piano - the mysterious Orkestra Obsolete present this classic track as you've never heard it before.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! AND NOW WE ARE FOUR!

Difficult as it is to believe (for us at least) it was four years ago this week that Mad Wasp Radio took to the airwaves. So we’d just like to take this opportunity to recognise all of our DJs and presenters for their incredibly hard work and fabulous shows, all the bands and singers for sending us their music, all our great listeners for supporting us so fervently and all the wonderful people who have made donations to help keep us legal and on air.

And following straight after at Midnight is the Soft Serve Sessions, an eclectic downtempo mix of music both new and old, together with poetry and obscure film clips from Trip-Hop artist Loopatronica. And keep ‘em peeled for even more new shows over the next few weeks, ONLY on Mad Wasp Radio.

Letters From Mouse

This week is a sad one for all of us here at Mad Wasp Radio as it sees the last episode (for the time being at least) of our fantastic chilled electronica show, The Magic Window.

Its host, Letters From Mouse, is reluctantly taking a break from radio in order to concentrate on his first love, making music.

Over the past 18 months, he has made Sundays at 9pm the go-to place for independent electronica and has built up a large and devoted audience. In addition, he teamed up with Music Is The Devil to produce the CD Mad Wasp Radio Presents Looking Through The Magic Window, a project specifically designed to rase funds to help keep us on air.

However, all is not lost as Letters From Mouse has handed on the baton to DJ SpaceTerrapin, whose new show, It Came From Enclosure Three, will continue in much the same vein as from 9pm on Sunday 15 August. We would like to wish the best of luck to both of them… and if you’d like to have a listen to some of Letters From Mouse’s great music, go to Letters From Mouse Bandcamp Page

AS IF DJ'ING DIDN'T KEEP HIM BUSY ENOUGH - “Artists, Rogues and Vagabonds” BY MIKE POUGOUNAS - READ ON!

The story from Mike: In 2018 I was asked by the Greek publishing company Ars Nocturna to participate to a collection of short stories about songs recorded by the British band, The Cure. I created a hero that has my name, Mike Pougounas and is also a musician just like me.

People liked my story, so the publishers asked me if I would be interested in publishing a book of my own. Since I wanted to make things difficult for myself, I decided to write a trilogy titled “Artists, Rogues and Vagabonds”. It started with the book “The Key of Eva” and it was a continuation of that first short story that I wrote. It is the same hero, that this time goes on a psychedelic trip with mescaline, to a world that is created by his memories and previous actions in life. He meets Timothy Leary (who is wearing Jerry Garcia as a speaking t-shirt) William Barrows, Charles Bukowski, Satan and many more.

The plot evolves depended on lyrics from songs from the albums that I released all these years, with my bands, The Flowers of Romance, Nexus and New Zero God.

My second book “Black Snow” (which is also the title of a song of mine released in 1995 on the Flowers of Romance album “Brilliant Mistakes”) is the reason that me and a number of friends of mine recorded 12 songs about my two books that you can download for free from Bandcamp.

The compilation is titled “Artists, Rogues and Vagabonds vol. 1”

“Black Snow” starts from where “The Key of Eva” ended, and we find our hero in a parallel universe created by the fantasy of mankind. This is the place that artists visit for inspiration. My hero travels in this 16th century world, he gets kidnapped by dandy highwaymen that ride choppers and their leader is named Adam, to take him to Captain Daemona and the crew of the pirate ship “Black Snow”. Their world is in danger since it is depended on the fantasy of our world, it dries out as our fantasy dies. It is also a world dominated by two evil men and where the animals, the apostles of mother-nature, have to find a way to survive and save the world. The trilogy of my books is entitled “Artists, Rogues and Vagabonds” and in their pages I blend autobiographical elements, psychedelic atmospheres, political messages, existential problems, lots of music, magic, ecology, adventure, crime and horror.

Writing a book gives one the chance to clearly present his fears, his skepticism and his opinion about reality, through a plot. Through a series of incidents that will make the meaning more effective.

I am using lyrics from my songs to go back and forth in moments of my life, and people that inspired me. The psychedelic aspect helped me move easier in a world that I created in order to live the adventure. For the moment, both books are in Greek, published in Greece by ARS NOCTURNA/NIGHTREAD but the compilation is in English.

You can catch Mike's Terrific BLackout Show - check our schedule pages for times.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that "That Darling DJ Duo", Emmett Davenport and Lady Attercop, will be joining us at Mad Wasp Radio from midday GMT Sunday 28th February - repeated Thursday at midnight!

They will get your rump thumping and your blood pumping.

They will bring a weekly show hosted by your favourite weird aunties and professional ladies. Sure, they’re old enough to know better, but they’ve never let that stop them before. They’ve got a wide assortment of music, vintage cocktails, weird history, geekery, horrible accents, and fake holidays they’d like to share. Remember, at the Clockwork Cabaret, it’s not work they do, it’s LOVE!

A PLEA FROM OUR DJ MIKE POUGOUNAS TO HELP ANNA

As flights are not allowed between the States and Europe, the Blackout Radio Show became one more way to be near my partner, Anna, while she is in her hometown in Boston, USA.

As if it wasn’t enough that COVID-19 kept us apart from each other, what started as a pinprick under her foot turned into massive infection throughout her entire body.

Suddenly I realised I was losing her. The doctors said they had to amputate her leg to save her life. There was only one decision to be made. There wasn’t any other choice. And due to COVID-19, she had to go through all this alone, without any visitors.

We had long discussions over the phone, before this new journey she was about to go through. Discussions about sunsets that we want to see together and laughs we want to share. Some decisions are hard, but life is so precious, and we have to do whatever we must so we can carry on. In this life, we have to be positive. We have to use our humor as our weapon against the darkness. We have to treasure life as it is so we can build towards the life we want.

Yes, life is precious, but it also has a high cost. So Anna's daughter, Tricia, put together a fundraiser, in order to cover the expenses that won’t be covered by the insurance.

So I hope you receive this as a note of positivity and light, of bold decisions and unconditional love. This message also gives me the chance to thank all those that support Anna, in any possible way. We thank you and appreciate you all. Take care, be safe, and remember to hold on to the beauty that is life.

MAD WASP RADIO AND HOST THE MOVIE ...

Mad Wasp Radio’s very own Emma Louise Webb continues to be lauded for her starring role in one of the year’s surprise movie hits. Host was filmed during the first lockdown and features six friends who accidentally invite the attention of a demonic presence during an online séance and begin noticing strange occurrences in their homes. All Emma’s scenes were filmed at Mad Wasp HQ over a six-week period; and we helped with props, stunts… and even get thanked in the closing credits!

The critical reaction has been fantastic; Host has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Time magazine named it as one of the '17 Great Movies You May Have Missed This Summer,' saying the movie is “not only one of the best horror movies of the year, but also an intimate look at creativity, film production and a shared global culture in the throes of a rampaging virus.”

Host is airing on the online streaming service Shudder, and played in hundreds of cinemas across the world on Halloween. It will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray in December.

AND NOW WE ARE THREE ...

As Mad Wasp Radio celebrates it’s third birthday, our thoughts go back to October 2017 when the great (?) and the good (?) gathered in London’s Vinyl Bar to celebrate the launch of Mad Wasp Radio.

Among those wishing us well was ‘Allo ‘Allo’s Herr Flick, aka Richard Gibson, who ensured that all present made a donation to the cause… and kept their hands off the fallen Madonna with the big boobies!

The legendary John Otway provided the musical entertainment, while comedian Ronnie Golden, aka Tony De Meur from the Fabulous Poodles, supplied the jokes. A great night was had by all (as far as we can remember) and the only slight downer was when host Steve Blacknell inadvertently managed to take the station off air!

Photo above of Christie and Leah of The Sisters of Duras alongside Richard Gibson and Lorraine Lancaster - more photos from this momentous occasion are available on our Gallery page which is coming soon!
